Sedation Dentistry
Are you concerned about visiting your dentist? Does the idea of dental treatment cause you to feel panicked and anxious? If so, you may be suffering from dental anxiety. This common condition affects both children and adults; however, there are solutions to help relieve dental anxiety so you can receive the dental treatment you need.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is commonly used to relieve patient anxiety in dentistry. This form of sedation is suitable for adults and children and is easily administered using a mask placed over the nose. The gas causes you to relax, and the effects are felt within minutes of inhaling it. The sedative effects also wear off quickly when the mask is removed from your nose.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation causes a deeper sense of relaxation and has an amnesiac effect. This allows you to forget about the details of your treatment, reducing the fear of returning to the dental office for subsequent treatments.
Oral sedation comes in the form of a pill, which you take about an hour before the treatment. Because this type of sedation causes drowsiness, we strongly recommend having a friend or relative drop you at the clinic and then pick you up and take you home after treatment.
IV Sedation
If you suffer from severe anxiety or have a strong gag reflex, IV sedation may benefit you. Administered by an anesthesiologist in a medical setting, IV sedation provides a stronger form of relaxation. While you will remain fully conscious during treatment, you will not experience the usual anxiety that accompanies a dental visit.
